| LibraryBarn | Dec 20, 2004 4:53pm | I wonder how many actual "Friends of the Library" around country ever use the site: folusa.org [folusa.org]
Some public libraries around the country especially in small towns have difficulty in keepings the "Friends of the Library" going, due to not enough participation. But of course, there are many reasons persons join the "Friends of the Library", one is they love to read books. On the negative humoruous side of joining the "Friends of the Library" person is in hopes, of telling the "director" of the library or "president of the board" how to run the library.
To the point, if you know of some "Friends of the Library" that have made a great difference in their community every year in the way of promoting the library. Write about it. Each one of us may get an idea from the posts and we may know of a "Friends of Library" community that is having some problems and maybe the ideas from here will help. But I also, know that sometimes all the ideas sometimes doesn't help especially now, with so many public library systems taking major cuts in funds. |

The Friends did landscaping on the grounds, organized public events in the community room (lectures and such), and were partly responsible for our sizable local history collection. Many of the Friends were "town elders," so their connections to other places in the community (eg, the local historical society) were very helpful.
I also worked in a big-city public library system where most of the people who bought a Friends membership did so because Friends got a special gold library card instead of the usual red-and-white one. Pbt. I hate it when stupid marketing schemes are successful. |
